| First Alfa 8C Competizione arribes in UK |
The first example of just 41 Alfa 8C Competizione supercars destined for the UK, arrived here last week.
The ultra-rare £138,500 hand-built Italian sportscar was collected by award-winning Manchester-based architect, Ian Simpson, from Alfa's largest and longest established dealership, Mangoletsi, in Knutsford, Cheshire.
Visually arresting from every angle, the Alfa 8C Competizione looks every inch a supercar, with performance credentials to match. Under the bonnet a responsive 4.7litre V8 engine produces an awesome 450bhp. Channelled through a sophisticated 6-speed F1-style paddle shift gearbox to the rear wheels, the Alfa 8C Competizione produces enough power to launch its occupants from 0-62mph in just 4.2 seconds, and on to a top speed of 181mph.
Ian Simpson, who registered his interest in the Italian thoroughbred when the vehicle was first unveiled as a concept at the Geneva Motor Show in 2003, commented: "This car is truly worth the wait. It's everything a supercar should be. It's unmistakably beautiful, it has a distinct engine note and the high performance credentials place it firmly alongside the most exotic cars on the planet. I am delighted and proud to be the first customer in the country to experience this incredible car." |
| Alfa unveils 159 Turismo Internazionale |
Only a small number of Alfa Romeos have ever carried the famous two-letter designation, TI. Now it's the turn of the Alfa 159 saloon and Sportwagon to carry the famous TI initials. Short for Turismo Internazionale, the TI badge now appears on several versions. The range-enhancing Alfa 159 TI line-up benefits from a unique body kit, lowered sports suspension, 19-inch alloy wheels, red Brembo brake callipers all-round, plus chrome effect door mirrors and exhaust.
Inside these TI models, electrically adjustable and heated leather front sports seats top the list of interior changes, along with new sports dials, aluminium sports pedals, kick plates and trim inserts. A leather-clad sports steering wheel and gear knob are also included in the sporty specification list.
Drivers can choose from three powerful yet flexible engines. There are two petrol units: a 2.2 JTS and 3.2 JTS V6; and one diesel option: a 2.4 JTDM plus a choice of manual or QTRONIC gearboxes. In addition, Alfa Romeo's Q4 4WD system, standard equipment on the 3.2 JTS V6, can also be specified on the diesel version.
And, by offering only three body colours - Alfa Red, Stromboli Grey and Carbonio black - Alfa Romeo is planning to keep the Alfa 159 TI models distinctive and exclusive. |
| Alfa Romeo launch a Limited Edition |
Ramping up the desirability of the Bertone styled Alfa GT, the Italian sporting car manufacturer has added unique 18" alloy wheels, metallic black paint and interior sports styling to create the limited edition Alfa GT BlackLine.
Yet, despite the stylish and eye-catching upgrades, the 2.0 JTS and 1.9 JTDM powered Alfa GT BlackLine models are priced lower than the current entry-level versions. Now on sale, the 2.0 JTS Alfa GT BlackLine costs £19,980 and the diesel version costs £20,980.
All limited edition Alfa GT BlackLine models feature a dramatic exterior look, with metallic black paint, satin effect wing mirrors, chrome exhaust and bespoke 18" alloy wheels. | New Alfa Brera to star in La Dolce Vita |
The stunning new Alfa Brera, latest in a revered list of globally acclaimed Alfa Romeo sports cars, will be making its UK public debut in London at La Dolce Vita - an Italian lifestyle show being held at Olympia, West London, 16-19 March.
This is the first time that the general public can view the award-winning Alfa Brera sports car in right hand drive, before it goes on sale here in early April. Styled by Giorgetto Giugiaro in collaboration with Alfa Romeo Centro Stile, the design of the new Brera remains faithful to the stunning coupe concept first shown at the 2002 Geneva Motor Show. Giugiaro recalls, When we premiered the car I referred to as 'very sexy', I didn't know if it would ever go beyond the prototype stage. I'm proud to note that the Brera is so obviously an Italian product. Alfa Romeo will never go out of fashion.
The Brera will be accompanied at La Dolce Vita by the Company's brand new sports saloon, the Alfa 159, recently launched in the UK and priced from £19,995 - £28,195. Designed around an all-new high strength platform, it maintains a long-standing Alfa Romeo tradition of engineering excellence, outstanding performance and sporting prowess within a highly distinctive, compact saloon car package. Completing the line-up at the Show will be the Bertone designed Alfa GT and the Alfa 147. |
| New Alfa Spider is cabrio of the year 2006 |
The new Alfa Spider, which has just made its international public debut at the Geneva International Motor Show, has already collected its first award - Cabrio of the Year 2006 - from a 23-strong panel of leading motoring writers from 12 countries across Europe.
To be eligible for the award, cars had to be presented for the first time at this year's Geneva Motor Show, and could not cost more than 60,000 Swiss Francs. This is the second time that a Fiat Auto product has won the award: in 1995 the title went to the Fiat Barchetta.
The award was presented on Wednesday, 1 March, by Luc Argand, Chairman of the Geneva International Motor Show, on the Alfa Romeo stand. It was accepted by Alfa Romeo Brand Manager, Antonio Baravalle, who acknowledged its importance, because it recognises our brand's intention to remain a contender in the convertible sector. This type of car has always been important for Alfa Romeo, accounting for some of the most beautiful cars ever produced, from the Giulietta Spider in the 1950s, to the Duetto, and the Spider launched in the 1990s.
And today it is the turn of the new Alfa Spider, which has the essentially simple character of a true sports car, combined with the technological superiority of the new Alfa breed.
Derived from the Alfa Brera coupe, which goes on sale here in April, the new Spider is an elegant two seater with generous dimensions. Inside, the passenger compartment is both welcoming and sophisticated, thanks to the use of quality materials and outstanding features, including dual-zone automatic climate control, steering-wheel-mounted radio controls, VDC and Cruise Control.
The Alfa Romeo Spider will become available with a choice of two JTS petrol engines, the 2.2 litre version delivering 185 bhp, and the 3.2 delivering 260 bhp. Both engines are mated to six speed manual units, and an automatic for the 260 bhp 3.2 is scheduled for later in the year. Excellent dynamic performance and a true Alfa 'feel' is guaranteed thanks to a high double wishbone suspension at the front and a Multilink system at the rear.
The Alfa Spider combines comfort with a sporty trim and a highly developed Alfa Q4 four-wheel drive system on the 260 bhp 3.2 version. As regards safety, the new Alfa Spider is fitted with the most sophisticated electronic systems to control the car's dynamic behaviour, from braking to traction. |
| Alfa 159 in UK |
The all-new Alfa 159, a true sporting saloon in the classic Alfa Romeo tradition, goes on sale in the UK on Saturday 25 February.
Designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro in collaboration with Alfa Romeo Centro Stile at Arese, Milan, the new Alfa 159 combines superlative engineering with outstanding performance and handling characteristics appropriate to the pedigree of one of the world's most famous sporting marques.
The Alfa 159 is built on a brand new platform, making it one of the toughest cars around, with a best-in-class torsional rigidity of over 180,000 daNm/rad. In terms of safety, it has nothing to fear from the competition, and has recently been awarded the prestigious five-star safety rating from Euro NCAP, which puts it ahead of the field for its segment with regard to crash safety performance.
One of the Italian sporting car manufacturer's aims with the Alfa 159 project was to take the lead in the field of automotive passive safety. An Alfa Romeo engineered all-new premium floorpan, which incorporates high performance materials, multi-ply sheet metal, and laser welding, was the starting point.
The construction of the bodyshell also benefits from numerous measures, such as the use of boxed elements that are connected rigidly both transversely and vertically; three 'load lines' in the front, longitudinal beams that run the entire length of the car, built-in deformable structures, and a large number of spot welds around structural nodes.
The result is impressive and class-leading torsional rigidity of the bodyshell. The Alfa 159 also boasts as many as eight airbags, seven of which are standard equipment on UK cars, including special bags to protect the knees, and sidebags that extend all along the complete window area. In addition, there are innovative restraint systems (pre-tensioners and load limiters on the seatbelts), and front seats with an anti-whiplash system that automatically brings the head restraint closer to the occupant's neck in the event of a rear impact.
The torsional rigidity of this new generation chassis also assures optimum roadholding, and superb strength and safety even in the event of a high-speed collision. This is achieved by using cutting edge technology, innovative materials, and the use of high-strength steels (58% of the total), and dual-phase steels (7%).
The central pillar has three reinforcement levels to protect passengers from side-on collisions, whilst the high-strength steel floor has been designed with three load lines to prevent it from folding even in high speed head-on collisions.
Nine versions of the new Alfa 159, priced from £19,995 to £28,195 on-the-road, will become available here in the first quarter of 2006, seven of which will be available at launch, (25 February), with a choice of five powerplants. Three new direct injection petrol engines - 1.9 litre 160bhp and 2.2 litre 185bhp 4-cylinder units, and a 3.2 litre 260bhp V6 available from March 2006 - combine the JTS (Jet Thrust Stoichiometric) direct injection technology of Alfa Romeo with continuously variable valve timing, (both inlet and exhaust), for the first time. |

It heads a star-studded cast of classic Alfa Romeos from the Italian sporting car manufacturer's museum at Arese, near Milan, many of which have never been seen in the UK before, and many also participating in the annual British hillclimb classic.
The Alfa Romeo line-up includes the incomparable P2; Fangio's Grand Prix Championship winning 159 Alfetta; the 8C 2.9 Le Mans; a 33 Le Mans; a 1750 Gran Sport; a 6C 2300B; a 24hp; a Sportiva 2000 and a Disco Volante Coupe and Spider.
Alfa Romeo will be capping this impressively strong showing at the Festival with the arrival of its brand new 159 sports saloon, which makes its international media debut in Bavaria next week, and which will be on static display at Goodwood.
The Alfa Romeo 159 has been created using all the company's long, acknowledged experience in the production of prestigious sports saloons, and heralds a new generation of cars from Alfa Romeo. The 159 project is the result of innovative design methodologies developed by an international team that has succeeded in combining a number of formerly irreconcilable targets. These include a highly entertaining driving experience, outstanding performance and distinctive, unmistakably Italian styling - combined with outstanding levels of safety, comfort and durability; all achieved without compromise. The ingredients include a completely new chassis with new suspension, and a new generation of engines and gearboxes.
This exciting new model adds lustre to the remarkable history of Alfa Romeo saloons, and is aimed at becoming the new benchmark in its segment.
The Alfa Romeo 159 is expected to go on sale here at the end of the year, with the Brera sportscar following in 2006. |
| Revised Alfa Romeo 147 in UK |
Featuring new Giugiaro styling, 150bhp M-Jet diesel engines, uprated interiors and revised chassis dynamics.
A revised 3 and 5-door Alfa Romeo 147 range has just gone on sale in the UK, featuring new Giugiaro styling, 150bhp M-Jet diesel engines, uprated interiors and revised chassis dynamics.
Priced from £13,660-£19,040 on-the-road, Alfa Romeo's sporty mid-size hatchback continues to offer a distinctive alternative within the 'Elite' sub-C segment of the market, and with three and five-door versions, three petrol engines, two diesel engines, and Turismo and Lusso equipment options, the new model line-up suits a wide range of tastes and pockets.
Launched in the UK in February 2001, the original Alfa Romeo 147 has gone on to record nearly 360,000 sales worldwide. Its special blend of Italian design flair and advanced engineering, which translates into great handling and sparkling performance, has won Alfa's prestige compact sports hatch no fewer than 27 awards, including European Car of the Year 2001.
The latest restyled 147 retains the original's well-proportioned, muscular lines, but the bonnet, front wings and front bumper are all-new to give a cleaner, more dynamic front end. In particular, the distinctive shield-type grille is now larger and positioned lower and further forward, which, together with restyled headlights that sweep back to follow the lines of the V-shaped bonnet, conveys a greater sense of the car's sporting prowess. The mesh covering to the lower air intakes adds extra dynamic appeal.
One of the strengths of the Alfa Romeo 147 range has been the breadth of its engine choice. Petrol engines in 105 and 120 bhp 1.6 litre, and 150 bhp 2.0 litre Twin Spark guise, and the 115 bhp 1.9 litre JTD common rail turbodiesel engine were joined in 2003 by the groundbreaking, 140 bhp 1.9 litre JTD MultiJet engine, marking the first appearance in the UK of second generation common rail technology. Its adoption of higher injection pressures and multiple, but smaller, injections delivers even greater performance and fuel efficiency, together with reduced carbon dioxide emissions.
Now, with the launch of the revised Alfa 147 range, this engine's power output has been extended still further, thanks to a modified injection strategy which also benefits noise and vibration levels. Already available in the Alfa Romeo GT, the twin overhead cam, 16-valve unit, with variable geometry Garrett turbocharger, now delivers 150 bhp at 4000 rpm, while the remarkable maximum torque figure remains at 305 Nm (226 lb.ft) at 2000 rpm. The result is a smooth, reliable and quiet delivery of power, with remarkably low fuel consumption allied to sparkling performance and impressive flexibility.
The maximum torque figure is actually greater than that generated by the 250 bhp 3.2 litre petrol V6 of the 147 GTA, and the result is exceptional flexibility: 90% of maximum torque is available between 1750 and 3250 rpm. The 0-60 mph acceleration time drops from 9.1 to 8.8 seconds, while combined cycle fuel consumption remains at a frugal 47.9 mpg.
The MultiJet engine is mated to a six-speed manual transmission, while other versions in the 147 range are equipped with a five-speed manual 'box. Customers choosing the 2.0 litre TS engine can also opt for the innovative Selespeed robotised manual transmission, which dispenses with the clutch pedal to combine the convenience of an automatic with the operating speed and entertainment of a conventional manual. Gear changes are made using either a sequential lever, or paddle controls behind the steering wheel. The electrohydraulic system instantly disengages the clutch, reduces torque, and smoothly selects and engages the required gear. Selecting 'City' mode switches Selespeed to a relaxing automatic transmission that is ideal in town traffic.
Precision handling and great roadholding make the Alfa 147 a real driver's car, one that enhances everyday driving satisfaction. Now, subtle changes to the damper characteristics and suspension design have brought higher standards of ride comfort to complement its dynamic ability. The proven and successful arrangement of double wishbones at the front and MacPherson struts at the rear continues to deliver exceptional lateral grip, swift cornering, great efficiency and crisp steering response.
The 147 range remains comprehensively equipped and a standard fitment on all models are six airbags - front, side and window bags, climate control, load limiters and pretensioners for the front seatbelts, a steering wheel adjustable for height and reach, a height adjustable driver's seat, electric front windows and door mirrors, tinted windows, remote control central locking, 'follow me home' headlamps, 60:40 split folding rear seat and an Alfa code immobiliser and alarm system.
All models now also have an RDS radio/CD player with eight speakers (1.6 TS 105 bhp six speakers).
Turismo models add a leather-trimmed steering wheel and gear knob, while the Lusso specification comes with steering wheel mounted audio controls, cruise control, alloy wheels, front foglamps and an adjustable front armrest with recess. The five-door model also has electric rear windows.
The sense of security provided by the 147's acclaimed chassis is backed up by some sophisticated driver-aid systems. All models are equipped with anti-lock braking (ABS) and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), while 1.6 TS Turismo and Lusso and 1.9 JTD Turismo and Lusso models are equipped with anti-slip regulation (ASR) and the engine torque control system known as Motor Schleppmoment Regelung (MSR). The Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) stability system - optional on 1.6 TS Lusso and 1.9 JTD Lusso - comes as standard on Alfa 147 2.0 TS, 2.0 Selespeed Lusso and 1.9 JTD 16V MultiJet Turismo and Lusso.
The 147's cabin receives fresh new instrument graphics, further two-tone dashboard combinations, additional Alfatex fabrics and, in most models, new rear headrests which allow better visibility.
Additional optional equipment items include parking sensors housed in the rear bumper and a six-position sliding and reclining electrically operated sunroof.
Available as an option on Turismo and Lusso versions is an audio system incorporating an MP3 player for perfect reproduction of digitised sound, while Lusso models can alternatively be equipped with a Bose sound system that has been custom-designed for the 147's interior to provide concert-quality audio for all occupants.
Finally, the 147 is now available with the advanced telematics system, CONNECT Nav, which includes an RDS radio with CD-ROM reader; trip computer; dual band GSM phone with hands-free operation; GPS module and either a pictogram navigation system (CONNECT Nav) or an active matrix 5 colour display (CONNECT Nav+).
Its unique green CONNECT key will instantly link the driver to one of the 750 operators at the Arese contact centre, which is operational 365 days a year. Motorists will be connected to an operator who speaks their language and can help find the correct route, give traffic and weather information, and even reserve hotels and restaurants, or purchase plane tickets.
The 147 range offers a choice of 13 colours, five of them new: Radicofani Red, Pergusa Orange, Giannutri Green, Dijon Blue and Navona Grey metallics.
